They were the first shop to stock copies of my mag-back when it was a black-and-white collection of shitty photos printed on essentially what was scrap paper. But they believed in me. The first day I went to Sk8 lessons at Plaza I fell in love with skating and the community that comes with it. Fast forward a few years and the people who were teaching me how to boardslide are some of my closest friends and the faces that I shoot on a regular basis. Mine isn’t the only story like this. Shops like this one are the core of every skate community. Unfortunately, ours is going through a rough patch and needs our help, but it’s not the end. So if you’re able, make a point to drop in and grab a couple items, shop online, or give this a share. Let’s keep Sk8 open and thriving for another 36 years. -JT

With Winnipeg’s indoor skatepark, The Edge, restricted to 4 hours a week for ages 12-17, the majority of skaters in Winnipeg have nowhere to go. For more information on YFC’s uninclusive policies, and ways to help, check the Manitoba Skateboard Coalition's Website.
No skating means no boards sold. So what happens when skateshops go months without board sales? It means the skate community loses the piece that ties everything together. Luckily skateshops don’t just sell boards! This winter (and always) make local skateshops your first choice. That way they can continue running contests, organizing camps, sponsoring riders, putting out videos, and campaigning for change for ALL skaters. It's no secret the issues surrounding YFC and the Manitoba Skateboard Coalition hopes for a new space for all skaters.
With the winter months approaching, local skateboarders are looking for an alternative space to gather as Winnipeg’s only indoor skatepark has drastically reduced program offerings and doubled down on exclusionary policies. The park is privately owned by Youth For Christ (YFC) and they have enforced rules that severely inhibit access to the space for many. Currently, the park is open 4 hours per week and only to ages 12-17. This is a problem with massive repercussions. As YFC is privately owned, there is little we can do to make them change their rules which leaves us with one option - create a new indoor skate space that is inclusive of all ages, religions, genders, and sexualities! The premiere popped off! Click "read more" to check out the full gallery.
